Your work environment becomes one of the most important factors in your everyday health at that point. If your office isn't healthy, then you'll feel the negative effects over time. From back problems to allergy issues, avoid these ailments by following a few tips to improve your office's health factors.
Sit Up Straight
Always be aware of your posture as you sit for up to eight hours during a shift. Ideally, your back should be straight with ample support on your lower back. Many office chairs have an ergonomic shape to their seats, which makes them a healthy selection for your office. Your feet should be flat and firmly placed on the floor with your knees held at a 90-degree angle. Avoid slouching, crossing your legs and other sitting positions because they'll cause aches across your body over time.
Get Up and Moving
Humans weren't meant to sit all day long. In the past, people hunted and gathered as a normal task each day. Because urban areas demand offices for business purposes, you'll find yourself sitting for most of the day. Supplement your sitting position at least part of the day by adding a stand-up desk to your work area. You can still work as hard as before, but you have a chance to move your legs or even walk in place. This movement alone can significantly help your circulation and fitness levels. Many businesses are adding these desks to their offices because of the real benefits associated with movement during the workday.
You may not notice that the indoor air isn't as fresh as the outdoors, especially when air conditioners mask any allergens or toxins floating around. There's no need to decorate the office with air fresheners when indoor plants will filter the air for you. Select plants that are meant for a shady or indoor environment. Place at least one plant in each office in order for the leaves to filter the air. Any toxins in the air are eventually filtered down into the soil where they're often used to nourish the plant.
Squint No More
Many offices still have those fluorescent lights that can irritate the eyes. In fact, you might find yourself squinting during the workday. Irritated eyes will only lower your productivity level as they tire out by midday. As a solution, employers can install natural-light alternatives. The fixtures can remain the same, but the bulbs may offer light that's more comfortable for the eyes. Desk lamps may be an option too. Overhead lights can create an industrial and impersonal appearance in the office, but desk lamps give the area a personalized and comfortable look for both employees and possible customers.
Your health is also affected by your typing position at the desk. Arms should be at a 90-degree angle with the computer keyboard. The eyes need to have a slight angle downward toward the computer screen. This position keeps your wrists at a straight angle to the keyboard while allowing your eyes to rest under the eyelids as they remain lubricated during the workday. If your wrists bend at a constant, uncomfortable angle, carpal tunnel syndrome can quickly develop.
